What is the work profile of ASO MEA appointed through SSC CGL EXAM?

Candidates aspiring for SSC CGL EXAM must be keen on knowing the work profile they are going to get after joining in the subsequent department or ministry. Assistant Section Officer in MEA is one of the most sought after post through SSC CGL exam. It is offered to those who score high in SSC CGL EXAM and rank in SINGLE DIGIT in the final merit. Candidate is posted in Ministry of External Affiars which is a matter of pride as it is one of the best ministries with added benefits than other posts offered through SSC CGL EXAM.
Let us discuss some significant features of the work profile ASO MEA post so that the candidates who are going to choose the post will have some idea about the work they are going to be assigned.
Once you are appointed as an Assistant in the Ministry of External Affairs, your job profile can have 2 verticals.
1.         Assistant (General): In case you are working as a General Assistant, your job will occupy basic clerical and classification work. You will be working for three years in Delhi and thereafter three years in foreign.
2.         Assistant (Cypher): This job profile has more stimulating substance in stock up for you. As a Cypher Assistant, you will be implicated in coding-decoding/ interpreting confidential messages for MEA. You will be working for three years in Delhi and then six years in foreign.
As an ASO MEA you will be entitled to the salary with basic salary as 44900/-. And final salary is approx 60000/- after deductions. If you are posted in foreign,  then you will get US $1800-2000 as a Foreign Allowance and US $ 400-600 as other allowances such as heating or cold allowance. Housing Facilities will also be incorporated.
The promotion policy is very encouraging for Assistant MEA post in case you appear in any of the departmental exam and qualifies it then you are promoted at a higher post.  The first promotion is given within a span of 6 to 8 years of flawless service.
The promotion will be in the following order:
  1. Administrative Officer (AO) is the first promotion stage which is given between 6-8 years of the appointment.
  2. Under Secretary is the second promotion stage is given which is a Group – A, IFS level post and allotted after completing eight successful years after the first promotion.
  3. Deputy Secretary is the third promotion stage which comes after six years
  4. Director is the fourth promotion stage comes after five to six years
  5. Joint Secretary post comes at the final stage which is given after 4 to 5 years as a Director.
Besides working in India you are given an opportunity to work in foreign at the following locations depending upon the category in which you are promoted. The government offices are bifurcated in five categories in foreign countries such as  A+, A, B, C and Hard C. In Super A category there are cities like New York, Toronto, Washington DC, Wellington, Geneva etc. In A Category cities like London, Paris, Madrid, Mexico City, Tokyo, Berlin & etc. In B Category the offices in cities like chicago, Warshaw, Zurich, Helsinki, Copenhagen, Vienna, Munich, Melbourne, Sydney, Auckland,Stockholm, Moscow etc. In C category include offices in cities like Thimpu, Kuwait, Manila, Bangkok, Hawana etc. In Hard C Category includes cities like Kabul, Damascus, Kandhar, Mazar-e-Sarif etc.
